Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. He won a seat on the San Fran board of supervisors in 1977 and was known for his high energy antics and overall charisma. Concerning politics of the time, Harvey was quoted as saying, "I finally reached the point where I knew I had to become involved or shut up." He was only on the board a total of 11 months before he was shot and killed by Dan White in City Hall. Just before Harvey was murdered, Dan White also shot and killed Mayor George Moscone. Mr. White who had recently resigned was said to have pictured Moscone & Milk as 'examples of everything that is wrong in this world' according to one of Whites aides. Suprisingly, before his death, Harvey recorded his voice on a recorder stating "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door."
