Recently, a friend wrote me a letter. After discussion he asked if I could repost it to maybe help educate the public on things that still do happen and how society still has a long way to go as far as tolerance is concerned.
Dear Friend,
Last night was my first Thanksgiving away from family and family friends. After dinner I had decided to go to Mr.Blacks (danceclub) and when I left, three 18 year old guys verbally accosted me on my way to the L train. As I waited for the train to depart they continued with the derogatory names. I asked to explain to me why they had such a problem with me. They seemed to back down for a bit, and then one of the guys came over to me and punched me in the head while two other guys came and continued to hit me in the face and pretty much all over.
I fought back but it was so overwhelming I knew it was a battle I could not win. As the subway door flew opened I ran and managed to escape.
I am physically fine except for some soreness and swelling. Emotionally, it is numbing and disgusting that our society continues to allow these things to happen. Educating our youth about the gay and transgender community should be a priority in attempting to prevent hate crimes and discrimination. It is sad that the passing of Prop 8 continues to teach our children that discrimination and hate is acceptable. Educate and respect each other.
Love,
Kipp
